In
1956 Volvo brought out the 120 series, or the Amazon as it was
known in Sweden. This was a unitary construction saloon, fitted
initially with a 1600cc 4-cylinder (B16). These cars followed in
the tracks of the PV’s, also doing well in rallying and saloon
racing, including several raced in New Zealand. The 123GT
variant is the most sought after, with a high-performance engine
and “sporty” accessories. The last Amazon came off the
production line in 1970 with a 2 liter B20 engine. An estimated
12 roadworthy Amazons are in NZ, half of them 2-door models.
This particular 122S has a special 2-Litre B20 engine installed,
with a big-valve head, HD oil pump, "K" camshaft, twin
carbs, improved radiator, alternator, M46 remote-gearbox with
electrical overdrive, lowered suspension, specially built
exhaust system, widened wheels, 60 series tyres, etc. This is
not a standard Amazon ! Warning; this car has no power steering
and parking is heavy, strong arms are essential.
